The festival I'm adjudicating at present has plays by Wasserman, Priestley, Wilde, Havel, Godber and McDonagh ... a pretty eclectic bunch! And certainly some demanding work there as well, which challenged resources, ingenuity and innovation. As ever, the challenge for adjudicators is to assess how well the play is done, not whether it is a good piece of writing, or not .... the challenge for the groups and their audiences is to select plays that provide good 'theatre' (whatever you think that might mean) and then deliver then with panache!

Some very interesting articles appearing, Ronan. I'd be particulary interested in reading observations on the circuit from a Festival committee's viewpoint. Are their needs met? What changes might help them to improve the overall experience of festivals? I believe that the more dialogue there is between groups, festivals, ADCI, DLI and Adjudicators will make for a more enriching Festival experience for all.

In my experience, it has always been a case of adjudicating all three at the end of the night. I'm not aware of any Festival where adjudication is given after each performance. I imagine from a festival/audience/groups perspective, it would make for a very long night, given the need to strike and set and for teas/coffees etc to be sold.

I remember working with Phylis when she brought Gemini Productions' 'Da' to the Lyric Theatre in 1974 ... the set came up by train! I re-lit the show for the Lyric ... Eddie Golden played the title role ... others in the cast included a young Barry McGovern, Anita Reeves.
Mary O'Malley's book on the Lyric Theatre, states that Phyliss tempted me to Dublin to leave the Lyric .. alas! 'twas never the case!
